Why is the Perelman School of Medicine budget so tightly aligned with the financial performance of the Health System?

Clinical revenues support our other missions. While we have additional sources of funding that includes: tuition & fees, philanthropy, endowments, federal/state funding and research grants---these sources only contributed
17% toward our total revenues in FY 12.

We are fortunate to have realized a +7% operating margin through the strong financial performance of the Health System over the past several years. This has produced the necessary revenue for reinvesting in our education and research missions. In FY 05 the Health System transferred $38M to the School of Medicine--in FY 13 that figure increased to $102M representing a 15% funding increase per year. During the same time period, CPUP IETS increased from $100M in FY 05 to $264M in FY13.

All of Penn Medicine benefits when the Health System realizes favorable operating margins.
