What specific actions are we pursuing to improve patient care---while reducing the overall cost of our care delivery model?

Patrick J. Brennan, MD
Chief Medical Officer and Sr Vice President, University of Pennsylvania Health System; Professor, Department of Medicine
Over the past several years, we have been guided by our Blueprint for Quality & Patient Safety as we continue to to improve patient outcomes across Penn Medicine. The actions we have taken are based upon the following imperatives:
  • Accountability for Perfect Care
  • Patient and Family Centered Care
  • Transitions in Care
  • Reduce Unnecessary Variations in Care
  • Provider Engagement, Leadership & Advocacy
We have assigned accountability for these improvements with unit-based clinical leadership teams and are beginning to form practice based leadership teams. Through these leadership structures and participation in Performance Improvement in Action teams—we continue our work in improving patient outcomes.

We have made significant progress—reducing mortality rates by 45% and reducing central line blood infections by 90% over the past five years. We will continue our focus in improving the overall value of patient care (improved outcomes at a lesser cost).
